Kongero at the Guildhall 2015 + Rhythms of Cuba and Brazil – Summary

Kongero No.3 Tour + A Showcase of Song and Percussion from Cuba and Brazil – Summary

In April 2015, Swedish, acapella quartet Kongero returned to Derby while touring their latest album “No.3”. Kaleidoscope Community Music hosted a workshop with the group at The VoiceBox in Derby which was well attended. Participants also joined Kongero at The Derby Guildhall Theatre on stage. Kongero draws traditional Swedish music out of the past and into the present with contemporary arrangements of traditional songs. Both workshop and concert were well received with great feedback from all involved.

The concert also featured a showcase of song and percussion from Cuba and Brazil, highlighting shared roots in music and culture from both countries originally displaced from across Africa to the Americas during the Atlantic Slave Trade. The showcase featured performers from Kaleidoscope Community Music, Derby Cordao de Ouro Capoeira and Stoke-on-Trent based “Drumshack” and included the first public performance of Cuban bata drumming in Derby (as far as we know! We would love to be corrected and hear about any other).

The workshop and concert was delivered in association with Derby LIVE
